Hi there, my name is Lauren and I am studying abroad this semester in a small town in Sweden while pursuing a business marketing degree. Fitness, faith, food, family and fashion are just a few of my passions and I am excited to have you join me as I experience these and many other adventures while in Sweden.
Fitness has always been a part of my life since my mother has worked in the field as long as I can remember. My personal fitness journey began about 6 years ago when I began working out on my own in our basement. Since then I have been driven to keep getting more active, more fit and hopefully I will become certified in either personal training or Zumba instructing one day.
As I prepared mentally for my semester abroad one thing was haunting me: how am I going to stay active? Running is not an option with my hurt knees and I did not want to buy free weights in Sweden because I could not bring them back with me. I knew I could continue doing Zumba on my own in my room, but I knew I needed more. I was so relieved when I met the international students, who would soon be my international family, because they all kept asking about finding the closest gym!
We asked around a bit and found “Friskis och Svettis” which loosely means “Fit and Sweaty”. The gym is just a 15 minute walk from our flats and was having a free trial week during our first week here!
The gym itself has a red and graffiti theme going on and is filled with LifeFitness machines, weights, TRX straps, cardio machines, a climbing rope, and a small straight track. Plus there are 4 group instruction rooms, a sauna, and a massage room. I was instantly hooked. I had found my Swedish fitness home!
Now that I have bought a membership my goal is to be at the gym at least three times a week and try most if not all of the classes they offer. Like PowerHour, Jympa, Spin, and Cirkelflys forlader. I let you know what the names of the Swedish ones are when I find out 😉
Well that is enough about me for one day. I look forward to telling you all about the different classes and experiences here in Sweden.
Until next time,
